Social Security Disability
The federal Social Security Administration (SSA) offers two distinct disability programs. Each of these programs has unique qualifying requirements and provides separate benefits for eligible claimants.
The two Social Security disability programs offered by the SSA are:
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI): SSDI is a program designed to assist workers who become disabled due to injuries, illnesses, or other medical conditions. To qualify for SSDI benefits, you must have the appropriate “work credits.” Work credits are earned based on taxable income earned throughout the year. Additionally, you must have a medical condition that meets the SSA’s strict definition of a “disability” to qualify for SSDI.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI): In contrast to SSDI, you do not need to have earned any work credits to qualify for SSI benefits. In fact, you do not need any work history; instead, you must be either 65 or older, blind, or disabled and have very limited income and resources. The SSA decides what qualifies as “limited” income or resources, according to various thresholds that are adjusted each year.
At Affleck & Gordon, our Social Security disability lawyers help clients in Columbus, GA and the surrounding areas with all aspects of SSD. Many first-time SSD claims are denied; if this has happened to you, you should be aware that you have a limited time to appeal the SSA’s decision. We urge you to contact our firm right away for help with your appeal so that you don’t miss any important deadlines or steps.

Veterans’ Disability
The U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) has established a program to assist U.S. military servicemembers who are injured or become ill or disabled related to their service. Veterans’ disability benefits are also available to those who had preexisting conditions that were worsened by their military service.
VA disability benefits are meant to provide financial assistance to veterans who are unable to work or engage in substantial gainful activity (SGA) due to their service-related condition. This includes both physical and mental health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, you may still be entitled to veterans’ benefits if you are able to work.
We encourage you to reach out to our VA disability lawyers for more information specific to your case. We offer free initial consultations and provide our legal services on a contingency fee basis. This means that you do not owe any upfront or out-of-pocket legal fees when you hire our firm. Instead, we collect attorney fees only if/when we recover benefits on your behalf.
